RICS Launches Global Standard For AI in Surveying

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has introduced the first worldwide professional standard governing the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in surveying.

Coming into effect on 9 March 2026, the standard sets out both mandatory requirements and best-practice guidance for RICS members and regulated firms across the globe. It reflects the increasing role AI is playing in valuation, construction, infrastructure, and land services – while reinforcing the need for ethical, transparent, and professionally accountable application.

Maureen Ehrenberg, RICS Acting President Elect, commented:

“Artificial intelligence offers real promise to the surveying profession – but only if used responsibly and ethically. This standard ensures surveyors remain at the forefront of innovation while protecting clients, data, and public trust. It supports the profession’s adaptation to rapidly advancing technologies while reinforcing the core role of the surveyor – to provide trusted, independent, and ethical advice.”

At Nicholas & Co, we welcome this step as an important safeguard for both clients and practitioners. Managing Director Nicholas Zorpides commented:

“AI is already beginning to reshape how surveyors work, from data analysis to property valuation. But its adoption must always enhance, not undermine, the integrity of our profession. The RICS standard is a timely reminder that technology should support trusted advice, not replace it. Our role is, and will remain, to provide clear, independent expertise for our clients.”

The initiative forms part of RICS’s wider commitment to upholding the highest technical and ethical standards across the built and natural environment, ensuring that innovation continues to serve the public interest.
